Description | Temple (far right) dedicated to Inanna, the goddess of love and war in which rites such as goddess's sacred marriage to the god of fertility Tammuz would have been celebrated during the harvest festival. Discovered by a joint University of Chicago-University of Pennsylvania expedition, the temple with a 200-foot long northwest face, now lies 15 feet below the present surface. Archaeologists located and explored it through trenches and shafts in the last weeks of the current expedition at the city of Nippur in Iraq. |
